Jetpack FlightDeck is a web-based tool for creating Jetpack-based extensions. Currently we're calling it Mozilla Labs Jetpack FlightDeck, which then gets shortened to Jetpack FlightDeck or just FlightDeck.

FlightDeck is a great project name, but it's problematic as a brand, since the tool is already associated with two other brands (Mozilla Labs, Jetpack), and the name is not descriptive of the service it provides.

Contrast it with Jetpack Gallery, which uses the Jetpack brand and then a descriptor of the function of the site. It seems like we should be using a descriptor here too, i.e. something like Jetpack IDE, Jetpack Editor, or Jetpack Creator.

Some long-term considerations to keep in mind, to the extent it's possible to predict these things:

1. It would be handy if the descriptor we choose is something we can reuse across multiple sites that offer similar functionality (just like we reused "gallery" for both the Personas and Jetpack gallery sites).

1. FlightDeck, like getpersonas.com, could eventually become integrated into AMO (although this may be years away), so it would be useful for whatever we do here not to make that particularly hard.
Aza had some thoughts on this as well, and John Slater might have good ideas here. cc:ing them.
Would it be possible to have an in-person meeting about this? Might be more productive that way...I know I have a few questions that, once answered, would help me provide better input.

I definitely support the overall idea of making the branding as crisp as possible...much better to have these conversations early on than to clean up a mess later. Thanks for including me.

Sure thing, I'll set something up.
Note: in addition to figuring out what to call FlightDeck in promotional materials and the content of the site itself, we should also figure out what to call it in the domain name for the test installation that we're setting up over in bug 554517. Thus that bug depends on this one.

Aza has suggested Jetpack Builder, and that seems reasonable to me, in the same vein as Jetpack Creator, but a bit less pretentious. Other folks we've mentioned it to also seem to like it. In particular, John met with Daniel and I to talk about it today, and he thinks it's a reasonable name.

I'm going to leave this bug open for a bit longer pending a final round of deliberation and feedback. I'll also assign it to myself, as I seem to be the one driving the discussion on this.

Mayumi Matsuno recently started working for Mozilla Labs as a Product Marketing Manager. I've asked her to take a second look at this and will continue to leave this bug open pending her consideration and feedback.

Myk, I know that we discussed having the new name for JetPack for the end of April release. I don't foresee any problems with this but wanted to know if there was a deadline for getting into the April release i.e., do you need a week to update the code with the new name, a few days, 2 weeks? I'm meeting with the Add-ons team this week but given the marketing team is out next week I want to make sure I don't miss any deadlines accidentally. Thanks
It shouldn't take more than a few days to update the code with a new name. I'm not sure about updating the logo, though; cc:ing Sean for his estimate on that.

Also, it looks like the preview will be happening more around the middle of May than the end of April, which gives us an extra couple of weeks! So no worries about the marketing team being out next week. If this doesn't get resolved until the week after (April 26-30), that's still in plenty of time.
Firefox Add-on Builder (potentially "Mozilla Add-on Builder" depending on overall branding decisions by Chris B.) Will work with Myk on the migration plan, when it makes the most sense to retire "Jetpack"
Note: I'm going to leave this open pending a final decision on Firefox Add-on Builder versus Mozilla Add-on Builder. Also, cc:ing cbeard, as it sounds like the final decision is his.

I talked to Mayumi today, and the name of the product is going to be Add-ons Builder (note the plural), with variants eventually called Add-ons Builder for Firefox, Add-ons Builder for Thunderbird, etc. (and the SDK being called something TBD that will probably be something like Add-ons Builder SDK).
