In order to get some testing with our new migration assistant and catch up bugs from people upgrading from 2.x to 3.1 - we've scheduled a Migration day in April (no dates as we need to be ready). Goals are :
* Capture feedback on the migration assistant
* Catch bugs, from people doing the upgrade.
For that we need to advertize the day to 2.x users. Main way to reach to them is to use the Thunderbird start page.
Attaching My initial changes to the start page to get feedback. Once this is done we'll need to figure out what locales we want to reach out - and make sure to tell them that this will be an english only event - dunno if it's best to translate the page and add a warning about the event being english only or leave the page in english push it to user. Idea is to switch the start page until the event takes place and then get back to the usual start page.
Jenzed can you have a look at my **** wording ?
Pascal what's you thought on reaching out non En-US users ?
Dmose patch is against .23 because that's the only thing I found in svn. I'd like to reach out to older users too ( like maybe .14 and .0 - if we still have some) wdyt ?

I'm sure that we actually offer upgrades from versions other than the 2.0.0.latest; gozer or Standard8 could say for sure, so I've added them.
rebron is likely to know the details of what lives where in svn...

I do recall there is (or was) a 2.0.0.x release that some people have tended to stop at and hang on to, but I don't recall which one or why. And fwiw, there are crashes on talkback from people still using 1.0 and 1.5.

We don't have the data for 1.0 and 1.5 usage but the vast majority of people are on the latest security release for 2.x. Maybe 150,000 folks are 1 or 2 releases behind and then very scattered to about 30,000 folks each on even earlier releases.
So maybe 300,000 people that aren't on the latest 2.x release but it's scattered and not bunched up into one particular 2.x release.

No you can't. Well you can, but it will mean that the users won't be able to go from 2.0.0.x to 2.0.0.latest unless it gets restored.

Ain't sure I want to test the updates with a Major Updates for every body. Some people will come just to test and in that case it makes sense to have a separate 3.0 install. Hence my idea of advertising to older releases - based on the above number it's not worth bothering, so I won't.
I suggest:

Volunteer for Thunderbird Migration Day!

We expect that many people who are using earlier versions of Thunderbird will upgrade to the 3.1 version that we expect to release in mid-April. We have done a lot of work in 3.1 to make the upgrade process smoother. Additionally, we are organizing a Migration Day, where volunteers will provide real-time support to users via a chat room. We hope our volunteers will also help us catch bugs and will provide feedback regarding the upgrade experience.

If you can help, please email ludovic@mozillamessaging.com.

I believe this wording is likely to be confusing, because it's easy to mis-read it in such a way that one expects 3.1 final to release in mid-April. I propose replacing both instances of "3.1" with "3.1 beta 2".

It turns out that this page actually lives on www.mozilla.com. Moving to that component so that someone with appropriate permissions can check it in there.
