User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; nl; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; nl; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3 Whenever I download any file with Firefox at the very end (when the download is 'finished') ekrn.exe (the ESET kernel) will use 50 % CPU (one core) and it'll take 3-10 second before I can use Firefox again (there's not stutter or anything, just no reaction at all in this time period). This might seem like a ESET bug, but the thing is: IE, Chrome and Opera are not affected. So this is definitely NOT (entirely) an ESET bug. This bug has been around for, well, as long as I can remember... I've tried numerous things: - Firefox in Safe Mode, same problem. - Set the scanWhenDone-value in about:config to False, no change. Disabling Advanced heuristics in the ESET settings (displayed in this image: http://i39.tinypic.com/2i9oxoh.png ) fixed the problem, which should lead you to think 'it's not us, it's ESET', but the thing is: there's absolutely no change in IE, Chrome or Opera. So it's definitely to do with something Firefox 'does'. Another possibility to fix this would be using a download manager which handles the downloads. So it's really got something to do with how Firefox saves the files. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install ESET (any version, I believe) 2. Install Firefox (DOH :P) 3. Download any file with Firefox, there you go. Actual Results: The download freezes at finishing (for really small files it will freeze before you can actually press download, because Firefox has already finished downloading the file in the background and ESET will perform a scan before you can even press download, the same 'hang' is detected then). Expected Results: No freeze... This bug doesn't seem to be specific to anything, just the combination of Firefox and ESET. The first 'workaround' is disabling Advanced heuristics (for file creation, not file downloading). Shouldn't be considered a really safe option (although it is what I've opted to do). The second 'workaround' involves installing an additional program to make Firefox work correctly, somehow that doesn't 'feel right' either...
Just noticed: images and small text files might not be affected by this. Any executable or archive file should give you this problem though.
