While helping a user on IRC, I finally needed to install the Windows Media plugin on my Windows 7 x64 box. [From http://port25.technet.com/pages/windows-media-player-firefox-plugin-download.aspx, which is about the sketchiest install experience I've ever seen from MS. But I digress.] When I load Firefox 3.6.3, the plugin is shown in about:plugins and seems to work fine (tested with NASA TV's WMP stream). But when I use Minefield with the same profile, it's not listed in about:plugins at all. Ditto for a new profile. Also ran it with my debug trunk build, didn't see anything noteworthy in the console.
Stupid question: Is your minefield a 64bit build ?
Nope, plain old 32bit build/nightly.
This is an installer bug in the MS installer: it only finds Firefox in the registry, and copies the plugin to that directory. It should be using the Windows registry. You can copy the plugin from the Firefox install directory to Minefield.

I just noticed this today also.. version 1.0.0.8 doesn't install into \program files\minefield\plugins but only \program files\firefox\plugins This sumo page doesn't reflect the issue either: http://support.mozilla.com/en-us/kb/using+the+windows+media+player+plugin+with+firefox#Installing_the_plugin

Its interesting that MS should still have a 2007 release for WMP plugin, but they had enough time to create this extension for HTML5 and Win7 for WMP plugin: http://port25.technet.com/archive/2010/12.aspx
Closing old bugs in the Plugins component. We aren't going to track issues in 3rd-party plugins in the Mozilla bug tracker. In addition, support for NPAPI plugins will be removed at the end of this year; for more details see the post at https://blog.mozilla.org/futurereleases/2015/10/08/npapi-plugins-in-firefox/ If there is a serious bug in Firefox, it needs to be filed in the "Core" product, "Plug-Ins" component.
