it's not important until people start demanding it.
I wouldn't waste your time until we start getting duplicate of this bug, or
votes for it.
we probably need a new bug for the case where a person used external movemail in
4.x, and then mail stops working since they are are forced to use internal
movemail in 6.0. in this case, we should alert and let the user know what is
going on.

Seth:
that becomes me. I use a movemail binary from emacs20 with 4.x and it worked
surprisingly well. When I converted my profile with a 0.9+ build the movemail
stuff was converted as a "Unix Movemail" account, but it does not seem to work
and the "advanced" properties for the server settings show IMAP settings instead
of movemail.

The absence of this feature is the one thing keeping me from migrating
completely from Netscape 4.x to Mozilla. I suspect that this situation may be
true for many unix users. For example, where I used to work, quite a few SGI
workstations were set up to use external movemail with Netscape.

I think Redhat Linux needs an external movemail application (it used to need it
in NS 4.7), as its /var/spool/mail/ directory has the following permisions:
drwxrwxr-x 2 root mail 1024 mar 5 23:42 .

I would like to add to those requesting the external movemail capability. We
need this capability to convert forwarded lotus mail into an acceptable Mozilla
mail format for understanding original addressees.
We have been heavily relying on this within Netscape and as another user
mentioned this is keeping us from fully embracing Mozilla. Is this something
that could be looked at in the near future?

Could this be written as an extension to Thunderbird?

I should deem external movemail of rising importance. /var/mail/ (or where else, it's located on different distros) is often not only non-writable by users, but also having their permissions updated to this frequently. Current external movemail does F_WRLCK in this case, and succeeds.
So please implement external movemail, or, alternatively, consider using other types of locking.

The primary use case people want to use here is non-writable directories. In this case, bug 384774 will fix this bug.
