This is the first of the two domains UPC uses. chello.nl addresses are no longer provided to customers, only available for customers who already had a chello.nl address before the rebranding.
Although for both pop3 and smtp the old servername mail.chello.nl can be used, this domain name is deprecated and therefore not used in the attached document.

This is for the new domain name upcmail.nl which is the only domain that is used for issuing new e-mailaddresses.

Remco you'll need to ask for reviews either to BenB or Bwinton.

Summary: Please add UPC [nl] to ispdb → [Autoconfig] Please add UPC [nl] to ispdb

Can you use the full email address as username for @chello.nl accounts? If so, please unite the configs.

And please use the new values for socketType and auth, "plain" is deprecated.

Chello.nl and UPCmail have been combined because chello.nl also accepts the full e-mailaddress. Also changed authentication settings.
Don't know what to set the socket type to because according to https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Autoconfiguration:ConfigFileFormat "plain" is the only correct term when the socket is non-secure.

Yup, looks better, socketType plain is correct. This is still wrong:
<username/>
<authentication>client-ip-based</authentication>
We should use SMTP-AUTH.
Also, please try hard to find SSL servers.

UPC isn't using SSL or SMTP-AUTH, they only use ip-based authentication for SMTP. I can know because I work for UPC.

Cool! Then please consider this an official request from the Thunderbird project to provide SSL servers and SMTP-Auth.
Please see RFC 4409, which defines what the SMTP server for clients must do.

I'm not high enough in the organisation to get these kind of things changed. However I've sent a request to another department that has a little more influence. However don't expect these changes to be implemented on a short term. If/When this gets changed I will file a separate bug to update the autoconfig rules. So please review this autoconfig rule for the current way UPC works.

Reasonable. Thank you.
Have you tried this file? If not, please place it in your Thunderbird installation folder, with name isp/upcmail.nl.xml , and try to set up an @upcmail.nl address. Check that it works, *esp* the SMTP server.
I am not sure that <username/> will work. I think it will bail.
Try using <username>%EMAILADDRESS%</username> (like in incoming) instead, but leaving <authentication>client-ip-based</authentication>. That should work (please test). Once you support SMTP-Auth, the user will have to only change the authentication type (in Account Manager | Outgoing servers) retroactively, the username will already be filled in.

It seems to ignore the file completely using Lanikai 3.1.1pre (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; nl; rv:1.9.2.4) Gecko/20100526 Lanikai/3.1.1pre)with a clean profile. It tries to find the correct settings itself. I temporarily disabled my mail virus scanner, but that didn't help either.

Possibly because of:
> I am not sure that <username/> will work.
> Try using <username>%EMAILADDRESS%</username> (like in incoming) instead
Filename must be <tb-install-dir>/isp/example.com.xml , if you set up foo@example.com

Filename is upcmail.nl.xml in the folder isp of the tb install dir
Already tried the username change for SMTP. That didn't help either.

Ah, use
<authentication>client-IP-address</authentication>
instead of
<authentication>client-ip-based</authentication>
(I corrected <https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Autoconfiguration:ConfigFileFormat#XML> - <https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Thunderbird/Autoconfiguration#Configuration_file_format_2> was correct)

- Fixed username
- Fixed auth value
- Fixed whitespace

This file works. Account settings are correct, and POP3 and SMTP work with settings that are created from the file.
Test message sent from the newly created account arrives on the other account.
Even though the XML specifies that the email-address should be used as SMTP username, no username is stored in the accountsettings.

upcmail.nl config, no SSL, network-only
Cool, let's get it checked in.
Later,
Blake.

Just tested it by removing the XML file from the isp folder and the account is correctly created using Mozilla ISP database.
So marking bug as Verfied.
