The startup instrumentation done in bug 560647 shows the search service taking about 1% of startup. This is a bit surprising, filing a bug to make sure we understand why, and how much can be initialized lazily.

The search service is now loaded asynchrously, and general startup performance is actively being looked into. I think we can close this bug now and defer to any newer issues that show up.
