And yet it makes no attempt to assert or warn; you just get a bogus GC* back. It's rarely used in a context that this can happen, but it's nevertheless a bug.

Long discussion about this in bug #525875. I believe we can fix this properly with the scheduled reworking of the GCHeap infrastructure (reliable block identification should be available to everyone, everywhere, at low cost).
