The old default (50MB) was selected fairly arbitrarily and turns out to be pretty small for common real-world videos. A single average length 360p video can be ~90MB on YouTube (and ~270MB for 720p).

We discussed this at the office. If we can't play through the entire media, we won't fire canplaythrough until the mediacache entirely fills. With a larger media cache, we'll delay this (last ditch) canplaythrough firing further. If some existing controls/players out there solely rely on canplaythrough in order to start playback (perhaps dailymotion?) then they may delay starting playback much longer now. We hope that the soon-to-be-added-in-Firefox HTMLMediaElement.buffered attribute will be used by custom controls to determine whether video playback should start, rather than the canplaythrough event.
