sometimes closing a tab will cause its title go blank and the X disappear and the tab to remain open (page is still shown), it cannot be closed from the context menu either. once the bug is triggered it will keep happening with every tab. and once it happens the only option is to restart firefox. didn't seem to happen before beta 4.

so far happened twice, not sure how to reproduce, seems random.

Reproducible: Didn't try
How many tabs do you have open? Have you also tried in Safe mode (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe Mode) with all extensions disabled?
usually in the area of 15 tabs open with 1 app tab (gmail), don't know how to reproduce it so safe mode won't help much, haven't added or removed any of the add-on I've been using since FF4 beta 1 and it only appeared after beta 4.

The bug didn't actually occurred on this page, though it's irrelevant. The tab cannot be closed, not even from the context menu.

another strange behavior, scrolling to the left the tab maintains it's position and eventually disappear (assuming there are enough tabs to the left of it), however if you scroll to the right it will move to the left, but won't disappear and will remain leftmost after all the app tabs.
this is still with B4B as I was not prompt to upgrade yet. I will try to keep the browser open so you could ask me to test stuff on it. there was about 15 tabs open when it happened.

also, tabs that were created after the bug occurred can be closed just fine, tabs that were created prior to the bug will display the same behavior when closed (or attempted to be closed more like it).
correction regarding:
"also, tabs that were created after the bug occurred can be closed just fine,
tabs that were created prior to the bug will display the same behavior when
closed (or attempted to be closed more like it)."

this is not the case, I haven't found a correlation, however considering how relatively rare this bug is, I'm inclined to think this is more than a mere fluke.
Can you please check with safe mode as already proposed in comment 1. Thanks.
The bug in my case as reported in 594548 happens every single time I start Firefox, so if there more tests or info required from the dev to troubleshoot I will be happy to help.

as I said before, it's rare and I can't reproduce it, so I can't use safe mode to see if it still happens because it might not happen for a whole month and that wont mean anything. and once I restart firefox it's gone until it happens again.
Can you please check whether you can reproduce this issue using the latest beta?

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/beta/
hasn't happen for quite a while now (I always update when prompt). since I've been using B9 for less than a week, I can't tell for certain, but with the previous beta it didn't happen and I'm pretty sure not with the previous one either. so it's fair to assume it has been fixed.
Considering Comment 12 changing status to RESOLVED WORKSFORME. If you run into the problem again feel free to reopen the bug.

I'm sorry but I was so sick of the problem that I have decided to give up on FF4 and switched to using FF3 and Chrome instead.
Just out of curiosity I just downloaded beta 9 to try. It exhibits a different behaviour now. Assuming that I have 5 tabs open, when I close the 3rd tab (centre), instead of having a blank tab with no title, it shows a blank space between tabs 1,2 and 4,5 of the same width as the original tab 3. If I click on the blank space, I get an error message that says:

ASSERT: Giving up waiting for the tab closing animation to finish (bug 608589)
Stack Trace:
0:([object XULElement],[object XULElement],1)

After clicking OK to close the error message, the space disappears and the tabs collapses to a normal 4 tabs without the space in between.

So I guess it's not totally resolved in my case.

Tested issue on x86 and was unable to reproduce it.

Can someone running a 64bit system try to reproduce problem?

Considering Comment 15, set bug Status to New.

Oops, forgot to mention that I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. But I suppose that it shouldn't matter since FF4 is a 32-bit application?
Thanks for the additional information. This bug is a dupe of bug 608589 and will hopefully be fixed for 4.0.

I completely forgot about this. anyways it doesn't happen with the final version, nor did it happen with the later beta builds. so feel free to close it as far as I'm concerned it has been fixed.
