hi,

i testet firefox 4 and respected that gopher doesn't work any more. I find the idea to remove gopher very very bad!! Gopher is history! And Gopher is brilliant. Becouse you can have just informationes. gopher has many advantages to http! And the implementation of gopher protocol in firefox is (from file size) very small. because that it don't give troubles.

i think many peoples will agree me!

Reproducible: Always
It doesn't work because it was removed earlier this year.

You can read about in bug 388195

There is an extension that will restore Gopher listed in that bug.

Summary: Gopher dosnt work annymore in firefox 4 → Gopher doesn't work anymore in firefox 4
Bug 572000 is also planning on adding a migration route from native Gopher support to the extension. Just because it's moved out of the main code base into an extension doesn't mean it's gone. Moving it out even gives it more reliability because it's now written in JavaScript and can be maintained separately (by the few remaining people who actually use Gopher ;).

OverbiteFF extension for gopher support:
https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/7685/

Supposedly even adds new stuff to make it better.
yes, but why its not more in the main code. may gopher is old but for example i find on every linux distribution a rlogin client even if its old and today anyone use ssh. i had only to say "use firefox if you wish to visit my gopher page" but what suld i say if firefox 4 is released? use firefox and addon 'xyz'??
i have the meaning if you think about what prefere and whats not goper in firefox you get ever that you have no problem with a browser that has one funktion that you not need. thats not meter. but if you are someon who want to use this funktion and has aditional to do sth its bad.

another example: if you have a car and you are nonsmoker than you have even no problem with the litghter in your car. but whats is if you are a smoker and you have to manuale build in a litgher???

what can i do to get gopersuport native in firefox 4??

See comment #1
History lesson: The reason Firefox was conceived was because the old Mozilla Suite was bloated and a maintenance mess. Solution to that: split the parts into separate better functioning applications and extensions. Whatever features you wanted back could be added back with extensions. That's why there is no IRC client built into Firefox and why there is the Chatzilla extension instead. Now Gopher is no longer built into Firefox and there is the OverbiteFF extension instead. Once the feature is out and into an extension the main application it was in and its developers no longer have to worry about it and the developers who care about the feature make it better on their own timetable in their extension. This is a good thing.

Cigarette lighter ports were largely repurposed as electrical outlets. If it weren't for that no car would have them anymore because as a hot thing in a dangerous moving vehicle with an unfocused driver they're known safety hazard. ;)

Nothing. However, as per comment 3 I already told you that the plan is to have an automatic-ish route to bring Gopher support to Firefox 4 users by directing them to the addon automatically when they attempt to go to a gopher:// page. Gopher support is not dead, it just moved to a better place.

Please, I ask that you not continue to rant against this decision that was made by others quite some time ago. For prior rants, see bug 388195 as indicated.

ok then i hope that this will really work. I mean open a gopher page and can use it just like firefox 3 only with a little more time at first to install the support. it shouldn't bee so that someone who has for example no administrator rights are unable to use gopher.
Yes, correct.
