As Bug 564934 has missed the features/strings freeze for Fx4, the download widget label that *was* in ths status bar that could be shown *now* into the new download button hint (on mouse over) to not break too much this functionality with the removal of the status bar (that I don't discuss here) as this info will stay in the primary UI.

If not blockink the release of Fx4, could it be tag as wanted 4.0, or final,
... ?

(we should be sure that the new download button has landed ; I'm using 3.6 and can't check it on nightlies now, sorry)

I was thinkg about this as well. We can use doorhanger for this purpose.
This would fits well with my bug 597145.

Definitely not blocking; I'll leave it around for a while, but I think this bug will eventually be killed off in preference for a more unified design for downloads. I don't know what the "new download button hint" is, so it's hard to really tell what you're asking for, here, and comment 2 looks like a potential bugmorph.

For me, Hint = the small yellow box that is shown on mouseover, on a button is that case.
The new download button is the one I've seen in some nightly if I well remember (it was next to the search box, with an arrow). As of bug 597145 it's DM icon (Download Manager)

bug 597145 is about mouving the progress meter to DM icon. This one is for (at least) the text (as I believe it's easier to implement, even if I would prefer bug 597145 to be implemented in time for Fx4)

After emailing bletzer about it, it seems that :

The removal of the status bar was planned, and the fact that it removed the download status meter was intended. It is technically a regression, but it is one that we are taking as a designed change.

The download button with doorhanger was replacing the Download Manager, not the status indicator in the status bar. We've removed the status bar, but the Download Manager still opens when a download is started.

So, UI don't want anymore a download monitor until the doorhanger notification and the new download manager is implemented (after Fx4).

Even if I think that download monitor without the doorhanger notification is important...

RESOLVED WONTFIX :-(

The technical term for that is a tooltip. (and its color is OS dependent; mine are blue)
