I'm using mozilla to do some development work while not attached to the network. This means that I'm connected to localhost. Now, if I use the little plug widget to go "offline", I can't connect to localhost even (arguably sensible). If I'm "online" without a network, though, the sidebar keeps trying to make (failed) connections to alexa, sidebar.netscape, etc etc, even when it is hidden. In my opinion, when the sidebar is hidden, no sidebar tab should attempt network connectins. And, when a particular sidebar tab is not selected, that sidebar page should never attempt to make a network connection. I realise that this will decrease the ability of alexa to learn from my behaviour, but that's too bad. It shouldn't sneak about sending information when I don't have the alexa tab visible (at least, unless I've explicitly told it that it can). Obviously this issue shouldn't block shipping, but it is really annoying. It could be alleviated by being able to select "don't show this again for this site" on the "connection failed" dialogue box.
dup of 53239 "What's Related surfing when it is closed - privacy issue" (by way of dup 53955 "What's Related sends all URLs you visit to Alexa".) See comments in 53239 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 53239 ***
