User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.13) Gecko/20100914 SeaMonkey/2.0.8
Build Identifier:

I have Thunderbird installed.

I am subscribed to <news://mozilla.support.thunderbird/>. When I select that link on a Web page, nothing happens.

I am also subscribed to <nntp://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.support.seamonkey>. When I select that link on a Web page, I am asked if I want to subscribe. I then get an unworkable newsgroup account named "News" in mail/news.

Reproducible: Always

See the cited URI for a test case. The links to newsgroups in news.mozilla.org will demonstrate this problem if the user's subscriptions match the comments. The links to newsgroups in news.vcnet.com must be changed to refer to whatever general NSP where the user has an account; again, the user's subscriptions must match the comments.

The news: and nntp: URIs given in this bug report and in the cited URI comply with RFC 5538 at
<http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc5538.txt>.

Note: Bug 226890 addresses this problem for MailNews Core, for news: and nntp: URIs in E-mail and newsgroup messages. However, this problem also exists for Core, for news: and nntp: URIs in Web pages. Thus, this is NOT a duplicate of bug 226890.

its not a tier one product issue - so its going to be wontfix unless it comes with a patch.
