There should be a new preference window/pane that let's you modify features currently included in the address bar.

When you start typing it automatically sorts suggestions to either change tabs, or suggests history and/or bookmarks depending on a few factors.

The first few things, which should be easy to implement :
Let the user decide what FF suggests when you start typing and in what order. ie Do you want FF to suggest History, Bookmark, Switch and in what order they show up.

The second thing is automatic url completion.
There should be an option that lets the user specify whether they want FF to auto-complete the url for them. Auto-completion would be based on most used websites. This way you don't have to hit the down arrow key then enter to access a website. (Much like Chrome currently does)

By giving the users the option of how the address bar works, they shall all be happy. If you are not sure about this, a study could always be made to figure out how users would like their address bar to operate.

Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce
Apart from "in what order" the first part is already implemented:

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Location+bar+autocomplete?s=awesomebar&as=s#Controlling_behavior

Also auto-complete as you type is also implemented based on frecency. Matching entries appear in the dropdown. If this doesn't happen for you it may be due to a fauty extension.
There is bug 566489 filed about inline auto-complete.

Bugs filed should only be for one specific thing at a time, so to prevent this bug dying I suggest the scope be reduced here to just the preference to control general order of each type: History, Bookmarks or Opened Tabs.
There is still no way to turn off the tab switching functionality from the address bar. A lot of users use the key shortcut to switch tabs and having it show up in the auto-complete field makes for one extra thing to sort through.

Also the current auto-complete works fine. Although I would not call it auto-complete. All it does is list in a drop-down menu suggestion that pertain to what you have written. You still have to cycle through them to select the right one.

I want FF to automatically complete the full url when I start typing. I want FF to complete the url with the first item in the drop-down suggestions.
EX :
I type "goo"
FF finishes it with "google.ca"

A example in the following picture :

I type "c" and the address bar is automatically completed with the first entry of the suggestion bar.
