Note that on Mac on my machine) I see about identical performance in tip with GL disabled and Chrome 7 dev (42fps).  But on windows phi2x@free.fr is seeing us get 81fps with d3d layers on and 28fps with layers off.  Chrome is getting 49fps on his hardware.  So there's clearly a drawing problem there...
Chrome is better at composition in software then we are, this should start changing as we introduce Skia and better Quartz with Azure for software rendering. I don't think this is related to this specific testcase, please re-open if you think I'm wrong!
