Mentioned in bug 54744, but that was closed as wontfix for a file corruption issue, so I'll split this part off: When I edit a mime type in the Helper Apps prefs pane, there's a checkbox for "always ask me", but it's always checked and always greyed out so I can't un-check it. 1. We shouldn't show the checkbox if we're not going to offer the feature. 2. We should offer the feature (allowing the user to NOT confirm) since there's not much point in letting the user specify helper apps or Save to Disk if we won't actually follow the directions and do what the user told us. 3. This checkbox should be in the New Type dialog as well; as it is you have to create a new type and specify a blank or bogus app to handle it, then edit the type to check the download box.
I too find this very annoying (to be always asked about what helper app to use when I have already set it); what is the checkbox in the dialog for? Can we fix this for mozilla 1.0 (or sooner)? This issue is also mentioned by Jason Beach at http://www.macintouch.com/netscape6.html: the Helper Application section of the preferences is alarmingly empty. Netscape still appears to know which apps to use (i.e. stuffit expander for .sit files), but it brings up a dialogue asking which app you'ld like to use every time you download (ala Windows). But the "Don't ask me this damn question again" checkbox is grayed out, forcing you to click "okay" each time you wish to download.

Here's another comment related to this bug (from Deborah Foss on 11/15/2000) at http://www.macintouch.com/netscape6.html: Also it keeps asking me if I want to use stuffit expander to open the files I download. Anyone know how to make it just know that I want to use that each time?
adding some real folks who are interested in this bug.

I note that in 2000101014 the box is still greyed out, but if you subsequently "edit" the File type, you'll be able to check/uncheck the box.

It's no longer true that you can uncheck the box by editing the file type after creating it. Any chance someone can offer a workaround -- what file to edit and what to change -- so that I can list application/gzip files as download, and not have to confirm the extra dialog box every time?

Is this bug a duplicate of bug #52454?
In build 2001061804 win32 I can uncheck the box by editing the file type. There is no check box for this in the "new" dialog. Is that sort of related to some of the things bug 86640 (Redesign the helper app dialog) is trying to fix?
Depends on: 86640
Mozilla shouldn't ask "what to do with a filetype" if user already installed a helper app such as Realplayer. There can be a special setting at preferences /helper apps to make it ask "what to do" and it should be disabled by default. Or let me be more informative. If it wasn't an annoying question bugging end-user, there would be no help regarding manual browser configuration at: http://service.real.com/help/faq/rp8/configrp8win.html#netscape6 It will eventually make Windows users "away" from browser since those folks aren't used to setting filetypes or what to do with them. Also let me copy/paste my previous comment about on this problem. "If a user allowed that filetype to be registered by a program, they -of course- do not want to get that question. Delete IE mimetypes, that is the same nag question you get."
Ilgaz, your concerns are addressed by bug 54940 ("must define list of default MIME type associations for Helper Apps Preferences"), bug 52441 ("System and user mailcap and mime.types should be used") and other similar bugs. Actually, I believe that this bug was fixed some time ago - editing mime type dialog currently have a working "do no ask me" option. The only thing that is left to do is to add "do not ask" to the new mime type dialog (part 3 of the initial bug report), but that problem is already conever by bug 79539. Should this bug be closed or made a duplicate of bug 79539?
if this is going to be marked dup it should be dup of bug 88066. I'll download a build today and test.
This is fixed with the new helper app dialog in bug 88066 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 88066 ***
