This bug is for landing the new site identity block graphics for the SSL and EV states. In the normal state, only the favicon is available for accessing the site identity panel. This mockup shows the new graphics (note that the favicon will be appearing to the left of the site identity block, it just isn't pictured here): https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=466942 Also note that the long term plan after Firefox 4 is still bug 588270
In the normal state only the favicon would bring up the site identity panel. What would happen in the EV and SSL states? Would both the favicon and the block bring up the panel with two different anchor points?
I thought the idea of the new design was to de-couple the favicon entirely from site identity. If that is the case, I would then think that for a non-ssl sites the domain name should be displayed next to the favicon as the site identity button with just a different colored background.
>I thought the idea of the new design was to de-couple the favicon entirely from >site identity. Ultimately, but in the mean time we need a target that the user can click on for the non-ssl and non-ev case. >I would then think that for a non-ssl sites the domain >name should be displayed next to the favicon as the site identity button with >just a different colored background. We landed this approach while back with the hope that it might increase pressure on removing the redundancy and addressing bug 588270. It didn't work. The net effect was that we backed everything out in it's entirety and are now coming back to land the new graphics. comment #1 >What would happen in the EV and SSL states? Would both the favicon and the >block bring up the panel with two different anchor points? yeah, if possible. Otherwise, just the identity panel would work in those cases. This is messy, but it seems to be the most incremental way for us to get to where we want the interface to go.

I would rater like that the favicon not be de-coupled from the site identity. This would decrease available space for url itself if two of them would be shown separately.Besides favicon is always shown so why not take advantage of that and use it more than just a icon that sits there separately?. Created attachment. My current approach is a achieved with css rules but basicly only a small green box around the favicon is shown in case of a secure site.On a normal site only the favicon is shown so the user can still distinguish between the two and know when they are on a secure site but it won't take space away from the url itself.
Since we're planning to go with bug 634065 's approach, this is now WONTFIX.
