Details

If I Customize and remove the Search toolbar item from the navbar, Ctrl-K opens the search engine page in a tab, instead of focusing the not-there search box. This is good.

But if I have changed from the default search engine (Google, in this case) to something else (for example, Bing), Ctrl-K still opens up a page for Google, not Bing. This isn't as good.

Poking around in about:config, it looks like the Ctrl-K behavior is following "browser.search.defaultenginename" instead of "browser.search.selectedEngine".

If I change defaultenginename to "Bing", Ctrl-K correctly opens up Bing's homepage.

It doesn't sound like it would be too hard to change the behavior to follow the selectedEngine pref instead of defaultenginename.
It's the same underlying issue as what is already covered on bug 436265.
