I'm seeing status bar (but not throbber) activity with IMAP messages with inline attachments. I'm not seeing status bar activity with news messages with attachments.

Summary: no status bar progress when downloading in line news attachments → no status bar progress when downloading inline news attachments
You're absolutely right, Seth. We don't display any progress whatsoever on downloading attachments (i.e. images), which makes the overall feeling of downloading news articles be 'slow'. At least for me. So this is definitely a usability bug. Upgrading to major, comment if you disagree.
Severity: normal → major
Still happens with build 2001-12-14-03, Windows 2000, 'Loading document...'.
Can someone tell if we are displaying progress when downloading IMAP attachments? (i.e. is this news-only?)
Yes, for IMAP we display inline progress meter...
I don't understand, This is a MAJOR bug, Somebody assigned it And after 1 year it's still in it. Will this be solved soon?? Cause version 1 needs a good status bar...
Mozilla is my default email tool, my current version is Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312. While reading email and loading the message/attachment (IMAP), it doesn't show the download status on the status bar. I think it is critical usability feature.
Both status bar and throbber work for me for downloading mail articles with largish attachments. That's in the mail/news client window. I also posted a message with a larg(ish) attachment to n.p.m.test news://news.mozilla.org:119/baf84u$19a2@ripley.netscape.com Again both status bar and throbber work for me in the mail/news client window. The throbber and little rotating circle also worked when I opened the above url in a tab in the main browser window. The newsserver I have access to does not have any traffic in the alt.binaries or alt.warez groups so I couldnt test with news messages from those groups. WFM on Linux 3.0--when I open a message in a new window, I do see the progress bar update as it loads.
