In Netscape 4.x, the user was able to see if the message has attachment(s) by looking at the icon to the left of the subject. In Mozilla, the icon looks the same regardless of the existence of attachments; therefore one has to ask why it is there at all.
Which Icon are you refering to?
The part of the main mail window that shows messages in selected folder, has several collumns, one of them being "Subject" collumn. There, on each line, is a small icon of an envelope. In Netscape 4.x, there was a picture of envelope for "normal" messages and picture of envelope with a paper clip for messages with attachments.

Also, There seems to be A LOT of space (too much) between the beginning of the subject collumn and the left edge of the small envelope. You could put a paperclip there (but it would be better to reduce this wasted space - new bug?).
