Build 2001-010504: NT4, Mac 9.04
Build 2001-010410: Linux 6.2
Overview: As discussed in bug# 64337 the Delete toolbar button should only
delete messages which is a common action. When a mail server and or mail folder
is selected then the Delete button should be disabled.

Marking nsbeta1.
It actually appears that the Delete button is already disabled when a mail
server is selected but enabled for mail folders.

wow, 4.x linux allows me to delete mail and news servers (except for local mail)
and mail folders using the delete button. I didn't realize 4.x did that.
just a data point.

I don't agree that the delete toolbar button shouldn't be able to delete a
folder. I think it's a nice feature and we do pop up a dialog warning the user
about what is going to happen.
We should be consistent between mail and news. In 4.x you could delete Accounts
and Folders (some folder exceptions) using the "Delete" toolbar button. But for
Newsgroups and News servers, "Delete" wasn't available because it was changed to
"Mark". 64337 was written because if this inconsistency (writer wanted "Delete"
to also show on the toolbar for news so newsgroups and servers could be
deleted the same way mail folders and servers could be).
Seth convincingly argued that deleting newsgroups and news servers was an
infrequent action and something we didn't want users to accidentally do (they
thought they had a message selected but a folder/newsgroup actually had focus).
You can use the Edit menu to delete accounts and folders/newsgroups. This makes
a potentially destructive action a little more hidden. The toolbar "Delete"
should be for messages only. So this bug was written to make mail consistent
with newsgroup functionality.

ok. So, I really don't want the mark toolbar button to be causing extra work
for us.
If the mark toolbar button didn't exist, would you think it's better for the
delete toolbar button not to work for anything besides messages? It's always
been context sensitive in the past. If you strongly believe this then we should
consider doing this.
This bug got opened because 64337 asked for the ability to delete news servers
and newsgroups using a "Delete" toolbar button just like Mail. It was then
argued that Delete on the toolbar to removed news servers and groups was
undesireable. And it then followed that mail should parallel news.
I don't feel strongly about whether Delete Toolbar button works for Mail
servers/folders as well. But I wouldn't want to have to add "Delete" to the
already overcrowded toolbar for news to parallel mail behavior.
If we can live with the fact that mail has this feature but news doesn't, I'm ok
with that. Delete is a common action in mail but not in news.
OE allows deleting mail folders with Delete toolbar but you can't delete
accounts. No Delete toolbar avail for newgroups. Eudora allows deleting
accounts/folders from the Delete button.
i'm not sure that context menus solve button bugs.
As long as you get dialogs [possibly w/ never warn again boxes], for "Are you
sure you want to delete this folder" and "Are you sure you want to unsubscribe
from this newsgroup" and "Are you sure you want to unlist this news server"
[or text that has better wording] I think that the button probably should be
context based.

marking nsbeta1-
I still believe that it should be context based.

Remember that many users (including those who want to unsubscribe from
newsgroups or entire news servers) don't use context menus. They're not very
discoverable.

sorry, I meant that the button should be based on focus, not that the delete
folder action should only be in a context menu.

about unsubscribe:
you can also use "Edit | Unsubscribe", the delete key, the subscribe dialog, and
in the case the group doesn't exist on the server, eventually you'll be able be
asked if you want to unsubscribe for it automatically.
on this bug, what about deleting accounts? I think that context menus for
servesr in the folder pane, and the account manager should be the ways to users
to delete an account. it's not a common operations, and I wouldn't want users
to be able to do it on accident.
sounds like an issues meeting topic, if it wasn't already.
jglick, when all is decided about what the delete toolbar button, "Edit |
Delete", and the Del key should do, please update the summary of this bug so I
know what to fix.

This bug is nsbeta1-, so nothing needs to be done for it right now.
The debate of this bug is: Should the Delete button the Toolbar be active when a
Mail account or Mail folder is selected?

The current behaviour in 2001121300 is delete button enabled for folder and mail
messages, not mail server (pop).
I think this bug should be marked WONTFIX, or be fixed...

For what it's worth, I hate this new behavior...I nearly delete my mailboxes for
or five times a day. I'm not an idiot, I just have many mailboxes and this is a
very disruptive behavior. If it is to remain, please give us the option to turn
it off.

Thunderbird 0.2 already has this implemented

I'm using Thunderbird 0.5 and it is very annoying to select a mail folder, look
and the highlighted message, click "Delete" and then be asked if I'm sure I want
to delete the whole folder - of course I don't want to delete the folder, I
almost never delete folders (who does?). Surely it's reasonable for people to
right-click on folders if they want to delete them, or drag them into trash?
Disassociating the "Delete" icon from mail folders would save me many wasted
clicks and interruptions to my concentration. This seems directly related to bug
#197439..

I agree wholeheartedly. I don't see why the delete button needs to operate on folders at all, but I'd love a way to shut this off. I keep deleting folders. Every day. It's enormously disruptive.

UI behavior in this area is ... inconsistent, in that delete key/toolbar against a "special" folder (inbox, drafts, etc) ALWAYS operates only on messages, never on the selected folder itself. Indeed, even when the folder pane and not the thread pane has focus.
