User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0
I see no difference when i check or uncheck "use small icons" checkbox in the toolbar customization window. It only changes the size of button box, but the icon remains the same. It also shrinks my usually (in 3.6.*) big icons from other addons. It seems that mozilla devs decided that nobody needs big icons anymore. Well, i do, because some of them change their status to indicate new content (rss feeds) and now i hardly can see it.
I want to be able to use big icons (probably 24x24 as it was), and i want my back button not to turn into oval and stay round while using big icons. Maybe it is possible to center back-forward buttons instead of stretching them.
Weird observation: if i have Test Pilot 1.1 installed and "use small icons" unchecked, then it shows big icons (Feed Sidebar, IE Tab + addons) and stretches the back button. Without Test Pilot installed it shrinks all icons and only changes the box around a button, and also back button remains round.
So far having Test Pilot installed is the only workaround for me to have big readable icons.
Reproducible: Always

Works for me on:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0
using a clean profile.
Are you able to reproduce the issue (small icons active vs inactive options result in the same toolbar/buttons) on a clean firefox profile:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles
It is the same with a clean profile. I have attached screenshots. There is no difference in icon size between 1 and 2 modes. Icons is still small and this is the same with the stock Firefox buttons. This is a usability drawback for me..
Is this with a clean Firefox install or did you update from 3.6.* to 4.0?

Can you confirm if this happens with a clean install of Firefox 4 and a new profile?
Same with the clean installation and new profile. Btw, what exactly are you trying to reproduce? It's clear that Fx 4.0 doesn't have large icons anymore (or give me a screenshot with small and large icons to compare). When i use test pilot workaround only the older extensions has large icons. All stock icons remain small, only the boxes around them get bigger.
Hmmm, ok. That might be as designed -- but I think if someone is trying to see larger buttons for accessibility reasons that we should allow Firefox buttons to get bigger.
FYI, the current design is that the default size is considered "large" and you can make your buttons "small". I don't see a current mechanism in the customization options to make them larger. IMO, we should.

Just don't stretch the buttons. I see that some extensions authors has already changed their icons to be smaller (FireFTP), so if you stretch those icons, they will look ugly (like the Back button looks now in my scenario). You need to make the box of the button bigger, so if an extension has originally bigger icon, it will fit and look bigger, and the small icons will still look small. If you do that, then my second task would be to bug those extensions authors to bring back bigger icons :)

The “weird observation” you had is in my opinion a bug in Test Pilot so I’m gonna file that one. Only small icons in Firefox 4 is designed behaviour I think.

This is a similar issue as the one reported in bug 583285. For more info regarding the creation of the "back button" please refer to bug 544999.
The add-on/s which was/were used when reporting probably need/s to be updated.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:8.0a1) Gecko/20110711 Firefox/8.0a1
This should be fixed by the landing of the patch in bug 571454.
Please check the latest Nightly and if you still see this bug feel free to reopen it. Thanks

Ok. In the latest nightly i see such behavior when Small Icons are disabled http://www.part.lt/img/6cfa3e1895ce7dd4113faaa4989d119c93.jpg
This looks fine. BUT. This works only when Test Pilot add-on is installed. And someone already mentioned, that this is a bug in the Test Pilot and eventually will be fixed, so then i won't have large icons again and your fix won't help. I want to have big icons like it was in 3.x version so i can actually see that the icon have changed (new feeds) on my huge screen. Now the default size is so tiny i can barely see icons in the buttons. Or maybe this patch is going to make such bigger boxes for the buttons as an option other than Small Icons?
Probably eventually i will have to hack that add-on myself and change "new feeds" icon to something that i can notice with the default tiny icons mode..

Just to clarify why i think this is not Resolved. You have fixed that Oval back button, when toolbar buttons are stretched because of some big icons in the toolbar. That's ok. But my ticket is about the absence of an option to have big icons in general (like it was before the 4.x version). And this is still an issue. Developers are seeking some design goals (sleekier, tinier interface maybe) by harming the usability.
