Details

(Whiteboard: [bugday-20110401])

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.2a1pre) Gecko/20110327 Firefox/4.2a1pre
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.2a1pre) Gecko/20110327 Firefox/4.2a1pre

when I drag a file from my file manager (Konqueror 3.5.10 in KDE 3.5.11 (Trinity)) into Firefox 4 (4.2a1pre binary tarball from mozilla.org), the mouse cursor changes to a cancel icon and I can't drop the file to open it in Firefox 4. I seems that Firefox 4 doesn't accept any files at all. This happens with both 32 Bit and 64 Bit versions of Firefox, with a clean profile.

In Firefox 3.x it works as expected.

My system: Ubuntu 9.10 64 Bit with KDE 3.5.11 (Trinity) desktop

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Drag any file from Konqueror filemanager onto Firefox
2. Mouse cursor changes to cancel icon
3. Try to drop the file
Actual Results:
The file isn't opened by Firefox

Expected Results:
Firefox should accept and open the file if it can handle the type (html, txt, xpi...)
KDE is not officially supported by Mozilla -- certainly not KDE 3.5. KDE 4.0 has been stable for 3 years now and the default on many KDE-based distros. Is there any reason you are not using KDE 4? Can you upgrade and let us know if the problem exists there?

Thanks for replying.

I use the desktop of the Trinity Desktop Project [1], which is a continuation of the KDE 3 desktop, is in active development, and is aimed at people who just want to continue the great desktop experience KDE3 offered. It is my desktop of choice and was for years (as KDE 3 then). KDE 4 doesn't suit my way of using a computer, it just has changed too much from KDE3, and I don't want to use it.

Firefox 3.x never had this issue on my desktop, so I'm wondering why Firefox 4 suddenly has and thought I should report it. Has the drag and drop protocol changed then since KDE 3 days?

What I will do to help:
- Get a recent KDE 4 live CD, run Firefox 4 there and report back if the issue exists there.
- Ask on the Trinity mailing list if anybody could test Firefox 4 on a more recent Trinity desktop, since mine isn't the latest.

Thanks for your consideration
Sanne

Here's the first part of my promised report.

I tested drag and drop files into Firefox 4 on:
- Kubuntu 10.10 with KDE 4
- Kubuntu 10.10 with Trinity
- On my system (Kubuntu 9.10 with older Trinity) and both of the above with programs based on Qt3, Qt4, non-Qt (like GTK, WxWidgets)

Results:
I can drag-open files from any application that is not based on Qt3/KDE3. Programs based on Qt3/KDE3 won't let me do that. This is regardless which desktop I use.

Weird: the only area where Firefox 4 accepts drags from Qt3 applications is the bookmark menu entry. It drops down and lets me add a bookmark via dropping onto "Bookmark This Page".

So overall it seems that Qt3 and Firefox 4 don't agree about drag and drop somehow.

Next step: tell the Trinity developers about it, maybe they can shed light on this issue. If anything comes out of this, I'll report it here also.

Thanks,
Sanne
Thanks Sanne. Based on your last report, I think this makes this bug INVALID. However, we appreciate it if you can report back what the Trinity developers find out. If there ends up being something we can do on our end, we can reopen this bug.

Thanks.
