2001010921 linux For each mail i delete from mailbox, the total count of mails goes down with 2. I have over 80 mails left in inbox, but the count is now at 37. Not sure i want to know what happens when it pass 0 (It is only the counting that is wrong - it doesnt' actually delete more mails than expected.) This message or similar displays in console when i delete a mail: tree is valid Didn't find X-Mozilla-Status where expected at position 4709610 instead, found . mailbox_message://myrealaddie@popq.c2i.net/Inbox#4756078
odd. Bug gone again in build 2001011021. WFM. Btw.. when the count got to 0 it remains 0 for deletes after that :)

uh oh - reopening. Something is wrong. I deleted all mail in inbox. Then dragged them all FROM trash TO inbox again. At first all looked OK - 88 mails. On next start, mailnews told there were over 300 mails in inbox. I then deleted all mails again and emptied trash. Then i looked at .mozilla/Default/myprofile/Mail Inbox there was 5 MB big. I moved that,, quit mozilla, and did cat /dev/null > Inbox Then started mozilla. Inbox at first click got an "uninutialized" error i lost. I then sent myself one testmail, which arrived and counted as one mail. I deleted that mail. Then dragged it from trah to inbox. In mailnews GUI Inbox just showed one mail - the testmail. But doing a "cat Inbox" from console, now showed TWO instances of the same mail. Each time i drag the mail from trash to Inbox and delete it again, the real Inbox on disk will contain one extra copy. So it increments. After the first drag of the mail (from trash to inbox), each successive delete produced the same error as initially reported: tree is valid Didn't find X-Mozilla-Status where expected at position 4709610 instead, found .

changing summary (was: each mail deleted reduces mailcount with 2) New: mail isn't deleted from Inbox on disk -- And it doesnt seem they are. I nulled out Inbox and Inbox.msf and tried again. After re-initializing the files and getting a mail, I deleted it in mailnws and emptied trash. ls -la Trash now showed 0 bytes ls -la Inbox showed 817 bytes - the content benig the mail i tested with. expected: No hidden content in Inbox after Trash is emptied. Or am i missing something?

I guess this must be a dup of something. Heaps of bad behaviour here. -I nulled Inbox files and Trash files now. -Then copied back the first Inbox file, 5 MB, where error was first seen. This should - and did - create a new Inbox.msf file. Looking at the content of Inbox in Mailnews now, it displayed two copies of each and every mail there. I suddenly had 222 mails. I didnt even know i had more than around 90, but this new figure exceeded double that amount, in other words. Clicking on the twin mails show different Inbox#'s in console, but they are otherwise identical in content and timestamp. upping severity. My mailbox is getting completely messed up by this.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; m18) Gecko/20010119 This seems to be affecting Windows builds as well. Whenever I move mail from inbox to the trash (delete), or any other folder, the mail resurrects in my inbox the next time I start Mozilla. No fun whatsoever.
There are multiple issues here: (1) Empty trash doesn't remove the message from the Inbox. It didn't do that in 4.x and AFAIK, it's not supposed to. Compacting the folder is supposed to do that. (2) Compacting the inbox folder doesn't do anything. This didn't work until recently and now it's regressed again. There are several open bugs on this. (3) Deleted messages reappear when the message summary file is rebuilt. This bug has been in every version of Mozilla so far, AFAIK. It was in 6.0PR1 and the corresponding milestone, at the very least. When compacting works, you can work around this one by compacting the folder every time you delete messages, but right now you're stuck. There's at least one open bug for this one as well.
Forgot to cc myself...
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux 2.4.2 i686; en-US; 0.8.1) Gecko/2001030621 It happens to me too. Only my inbox gets flooded with emails I've moved in other folders only when I change to a new nightly. Whether or nor I restard mailnews/mozilla doesn't matter.
*** Bug 69477 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
a couple of additional observations (based on 0.8 and 0.81 on Windows2000): - this reappearance of messages occurs after moving messages to other folders, not just after deleting them. - the effect occurs with "Sent" folders, not just "Inbox" folders. - the effect appears not to occur simultaneously across all accounts' Inbox and Sent folders, but more unpredictably. i find that sometimes the Inbox on one mail account will have all its messages reappear, but not in the Sent folder, and another account will have reappearance in the Sent folder and not the Inbox, and another mail account will not have the effect at all. but all my mail accounts have suffered the effect in Inbox and Sent folders several times.
I fixed the problem, first reported, when this bug was opened. See #65630. I don't remember whether the fix was in moz 0.8 /0.8.1. But it should be fixed in latest nightly builds. Marking worksforme. Reopen if you see in the latest build.
