Details

In the event they need to do database stuff or whatever, we need to be able to do these things asynchronously. We'd need to introduce a new API but that is probably doable without breaking backwards compat. The harder problem is that the shutdown/uninstall methods can get called during startup which currently cannot be asynchronous.
