Try to download this file http://www.fileserve.com/file/aNztUZS , click slower download, after typing in the captcha click it again, the countdown will begin, then switch to other tab, stay for a few seconds and then switch back, you will find the countdown stops while you are at other tabs.
If it behaves this way on all browsers, I will certainly assume it's a new feature of this site. but the problem is that on Fx4 and other browser like Chrome it all works fine.

Countdown stops when tab is switched and switching back to the original tab, countdown starts.

Actually, dev builds of chrome behave the same way we do.  But yes, this was not a site change.
