We are collecting a snapshot of the community via
http://www.mozilla.org/phonebook/

Being on this list, means your interested in the Phonebook when it's released. This also gives us an idea of the size and geographic distribution of our active community.

We need an additional field: Area of Interest. This will help us understand the types of Volunteers in today's active community.

The area of interest should be recorded in the Responsys Contact List.
David or Mary - Is Comment#0 correct? Please add any other details, such as the list of values in the drop down.

Yep :) Chris of course might have an idea, but this should cover off for now.

At this point it might be interesting to not have pre-defined areas and leave it open ended since we're trying to have this information inform the size and shape of the community. If we'd prefer to have a list of options, I can put a draft list together.

Opened ended is the most "open" way of collecting information, but it will be much more difficult to aggregate any of the data. It is sort of a catch 22 and maybe at this stage just an open text box instead of a select window may give users more freedom to put whatever they want. It could just come down to that we are really interested in the email address more then anything else and keeping the form as simple as possible may be best.

Thoughts?
Agree with Chris More re. data aggregation. This is what we've used for surveys:

Other
Codling
QA
Localization
Engagement/Marketing
Legal
Web Development
Support
Mozilla Drumbeat
Mozilla Labs
Developer Documentation
Add-ons
Visual Design
It would be great to allow folks to select multiple options.
That list is fine with me. Just one change:

Codling > Coding
Haha!
Hey again: Let's also add "Mobile".
Thanks!
Is there an ETA for this to get added to the form?

I can also take a pass at adding this if there is some information about correct form values to use for Responsys to gather this information.
In case this helps, I updated the phonebook page on stage to include a new form element that lets people pick multiple items from comment #5 and comment #8 (I also tweaked the page a bit and included the screencast).

I didn't know what to pick for the form values for the Responsys integration side of things though, so that still needs tweaking.
Winston or Laura: We want to add a new field 'Area of Interest'. We currently have the contact list 'MOZILLA_PHONE'.

Is there some setup in the Responsys admin tool, or can I just add this new field to data when saving to the contact list.

Examples:
INTEREST_Coding
INTEREST_Add-ons,Coding,Design
Depends on: 655873
Good question. Not sure what the best method of setting this up in Responsys is. I can set up fields for each interest, but there may be a better way to do it. I'm trying to get a call schedule with Responsys for some other outstanding items. I'll add this to my list of things to talk about.

Winston - to get an idea of the values, here is David's form
http://www-stage.mozilla.org/phonebook/

The only change is I'd remove any spaces from the value we track.
Cool - I'm talking with Responsys today at 1 PM Pacific. I'll follow up on the bug before end of business today.
Hey there -

Talked with Responsys. This isn't as simple as setting up a new field. He recommended using profile extension tables. Our integration contact is not sure if we can do this with the form post method we use to send data to Responsys. He's checking on that. However, we've been planning on moving from form post to API. He's certain that model would work.

He's doing some research on his end and will give us an action plan by Thursday during our regularly scheduled call. Stay tuned.

With the launch coming up soon, we won't need this page for much longer so I think we can wontfix this.
