We'd like to create some new stickers to use as swag for people who sign-up for the phonebook. Something that ties in to the word 'Mozillians' that we'll use for the URL for the site. Happy to talk through this more to figure out what makes sense.

Thanks David. Would love more clarification/background. I know that Cbeard really liked the "Mozillian" concept before, and we were thinking of developing an identity around it... part of the "join mozilla" initiative and so forth. So, just wanted to better understand what you were looking for here. A typographic solution to express "Mozillian"? a badge type design? a sticker sheet of existing graphics? or a new set of icons / identity ? The latter would probably not be best IMO, I'd vote for using existing graphics somehow. Let me know what you're thinking.

We definitely weren't thinking of creating anything new for this. I'd also want to create some clear difference with any Join Mozilla branding since there seems to be some potential for tension when there aren't clear differences being made between people who volunteer by donating and people who volunteer by time (note some feedback on early Join Mozilla blog posts when the term 'mozillian' was used). So this means the audience for this Mozillian sticker is people who are actively contributing their time to the project (eg, people who would be invited to a Summit). We'd also want the sticker to tie in to the look of what will be the mozillians.org phonebook site which is going to use a design based on the current www.mozilla.org site. So maybe something with paint strokes and the dino and some text saying just 'Mozillian' or 'I'm a Mozillian'?

Thanks David. Quick question: * is it required to use the Dino here? I'm still a little unclear still as to where we're phasing him out and where we should use him. Nothing against the canonical Dino, he's great... but even though these are hardcore/active contributors... is it worth presenting a stronger "mozilla" vs. the Dino head? We can do a badge-like design that says "I'm a Mozillian" and incorporate some of the paint splashes you mentioned. It'd be relatively simple, but we can still make it look cool. What do you think?

I need to go back through the brand information and find the reference, but my take away was that the only group that had an attachment to the dino was active community members and that they had a passionate level of attachment.
So with that having been said, I had been assuming that a dino head sticker would be compelling for that audience. I'm fine mocking up different options that don't include the dino and we can get feedback about which is most compelling.

Hey guys, lets try to have a quick in-person chat about this on Monday. I can find something on the calendar.. or just grab you guys for a quick huddle.

Hey guys, per our conversation yesterday... here's a link that includes some of the other concept art that Lee had done for the Mozilla 10 Years poster. Take a look and let me know if any of them strike your fancy and are something we can tweak for the sticker. Keep in mind they're all in the constructivist style... I know there are some sensitivities around that.

I would nix the constructivist style for this...probably best to start fresh anyway.

So, should we go in the direction of mozilla.org aesthetic? the paint splashes? or maintain the black, red, orange, white color palette but make it less constructivist in style? or something entirely different? Would be nice to stick to an existing style vs. starting from scratch. What do we want this to say? "I am a Mozillian" ? "Mozillian" ?

Let's start with the text. Are we really investing in the term "Mozillian" as a public facing thing? I'm not totally sold on that...seems like yet another brand we'd have to develop and maintain. Perhaps we can get Matej involved to come up with a few short phrases that make it clear the sticker holder is representing Mozilla. As for the visual style, how big are the stickers? My thought is that between the dino head and the text there probably doesn't need to be much else. Obviously we'll need some sort of framing device but it doesn't necessarily have to be a big fancy design.

Sounds good. I can cc Matej to get his thoughts. I think something around 2.5 x 3, or 3.5 by 3 would be good enough. Nothing too big. That's assuming that it's a square.. we can go round and do something that feels more like a badge. With a "badge" concept, it's easy to add basic frills around the Dino head and the copy so it feels cool but we're not reinventing the wheel with new graphics.

Re style, sensitivities seem to be specifically around the red star instead of the constructivist style itself, but fine not to go that direction. Going with the existing paint splashes as an alternative makes sense instead of trying to create something new. Re text, this isn't a new brand since people have been self identifying this way for years. Our approach is to leverage the affinities that already exist with the target audience for the site. I welcome Matej's feedback, but I think we need a very compelling reason to not go with 'Mozillian'. Re size and fanciness, yes, no reason to have this be anything more than a simple design.

cc-ing Victoria who can help us whip this up. Victoria, we're wrapping up discussions on design direction, and should be ready to start soon. Stay tuned.

I have to say, I don't entirely agree with comment #14...I think we can go a little more 'design neutral' than the paint splashes, for example. Of course we can still have a design, but I'm not sure we need to call back to that look so explicitly. Mary, what do you think about "Mozillian"?

That's fine. My thought was to not turn this into a big project and just reuse some existing pieces. If you and Tara would prefer to start fresh and we have the design bandwidth, that's cool.

I'd like to use Mozillians for the affinity that is around the term and that the phonebook's URL will use Mozillians.

Ok guys So, here's what I"m gathering: * Dino head graphic * "Mozillian" as text * Not constructivist style or palette * Not necessarily paint splashes as in mozilla.org * Perhaps something like a badge/flair design * Sticker size either round or square. roughly 3 inches across. * We'll add frills and other decorative ornaments around it, perhaps go in the direction of some of the Facebook badges that we created for FF4 (but not making this Firefoxy). Thoughts? If you all agree, I'll have Victoria start putting some samples together.

So what will the text read exactly? That part isn't quite clear to me. Otherwise, sounds good - I like the badge/flair direction.

Good question. Not sure. It could be something as simple as "Mozillian" or plural "Mozillians" I'm not a big fan of "I am a Mozillian" but perhaps that's what people want? Mary/Boswell, thoughts on copy?

I'd use "Mozillian" so it's a badge and states their association.

Thanks :) we'll make it awesome. Looking at: * Dino head + Mozillian * Design direction: flair pin/badge design, decorative ornaments like stars, ribbons, laurels, etc. and other details similar to vintage luggage tags and similar stickers. It'll feel appropriately mozilla, and awesome.

I've attached a few badge designs that align with the color palette of the WIP screenshot Tara sent. I also took hints from the FB badges and the Creative Collective file with the dino head she passed along. I can apply more grunge effects once we get closer in style. Let me know what you think.

Thanks Victoria. These are definitely better. I don't think we want to take too many cues from the MCC logo (since that's a different thing) but I like the more detailed/stylized versions you've shown here. I think right now we need to consolidate the design style of these stickers and the work being done on the website (which this relates to). Right now they're a bit disjointed. So, I might ask you to send me the PSDs and we'll move this over to the other designer's plate to wrap up. I think in hindsight, it might have been better to have one designer work on these vs. two :) I think you've done a great job so far and I'm sure you can make this look even more awesome... but I think it just might make more sense to have one person design the assets for this campaign so that everything feels like part of the same unit. Especially since the assets for the website aren't totally done it. Feels less complex that way. Would that be okay with you Victoria?
