The black border around the URL/titlebar widget looks awkward; it makes the widget feel less wide than the content area, since the top bar of Gingerbread is also black. Perhaps, it would be prettier if the perceived width of the URL/titlebar were the same as that of the content area. If my intuitions don't make sense, feel free to close this bug as WONTFIX with some explanation. :)
Using a persona makes this issue go away :)
Hi Frank, Mark, Madhava and I were actually talking about this last week. I just mocked up a comparison, and I think it could work... http://cl.ly/2T2z3f2F123r3X2z1J0O It would help to get a test build with the simplified bar so we could play around with it to see how it feels. I think it would be quite nice and streamlined, but my only concern is that it's a bit more of a departure from the current (2.2 and earlier) UI than I wanted to make. FWIW I actually *like* the way the bar is inset from the content. It makes it feel more like a little floating widget that is separate from my content, which is consisent with how we separate our tabs from everything else, and how we separate our navigation. That said, let's try it and see :)
Hi Ian, Thanks for the explanation, and a belated welcome to Mozilla! I'm an front-end engineer on the Firefox desktop team, and unfortunately I won't have time to hack on the mobile UI anytime soon. I also noticed the consistency in separation with the inset and liked the concept, but in practice it still felt unbalanced and bottom-heavy. The mockup looks decent. The favicon might look better centered. Now that the border radius has been removed and the bottom border has a harder edge, it's less obvious that bottom border is supposed to be a shadow or bevel, so the reload icon looks more off-center too. This aside, the new Gingerbread theming looks fantastic. Great work, mobile team!
Now that I've been using it for a few days, I've gotten used to it. Maybe it was just an OMGCHANGE reaction. Thanks for taking the time to respond, Ian. Resolving it as WORKSFORME at least for now.
