After Firefox has been running for a bit, shutting Firefox down results in the firefox.exe process remaining in memory. This began about a month or so ago and, so far as I can tell, affects only Firefox running on 32-bit Windows. On 64-bit Windows, there is no problem.
I've already ruled out extensions, as Firefox on the 64-bit Windows has basically the same set of extensions as the one running on the 32-bit Windows.
I ran Firefox in a debugger and was able to obtain the attached stack trace. I waited for about 5 minutes, after closing Firefox, before issue the break and generating the trace.
