Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0
Build ID: 20110710030756

Steps to reproduce:

since rapid release circle started, add-ons have become much easier "incompatible". Authors used to set compatible from 3.x-4.0 can go through a year. Now, 4.0 to 6.0b just 3 months. So more users tend to disable compatibility check.

Supposed you're using Fx 6 beta, compatibility check disabled. A addon max support version is Fx 4, but you use it anyway. The the author have an update because Fx 5 is released, fixed some bugs in Fx 5. An update fixed bug from Fx 4 to Fx 5 likely did the same in Fx 6.... but you won't know because Firefox will tell you there are NO Update available.

But even you turn off the compatibiliyt checks, Firefox won't alert you there are update of your installed add-on when the new release is not official support your Fx version!

Since the users had turned off the compatibility checks anyway, why let them know there is newer version out there, and let them to choice whether update or not?

Expected results:

If compatibilty checks is disabled, Firefox should let user know there are update of addons even the new version still not compatible.
