I'm not sure how we want to handle this exactly, since 2.0.x still ships the JEP, but before we release 2.1b1, we need to update the Java listing to point to JEP for 10.4 and 10.5. It currently reads: • Java Embedding Plugin (bundled with Camino), for Java applets I think, given the complexities, maybe we want a nested list? The problem is that we currently list the plug-in name (and version, and details) and then the content type. In the Java case, it would be better to have the content type first and then list the plug-in options, like so: • Java applets: o Java Embedding Plugin (bundled with Camino 2.0.x) o Java Embedding Plugin[link] 0.9.7.5 or later (for Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5) o Java Plug-In 2 ver??? (for Mac OS X 10.6 and later). (Java Plug-In 2 is included with Mac OS X 10.6 and later; use Mac OS X Software Update to ensure you have the latest Java update for your version of Mac OS X.) If we switch one, we should really switch all of them to the content-plug-note pattern. (As a bonus, we can hide the JEP download and Plugin2 from 2.0.x users with camino-future, since the nested <li> is a block element.)
I've seen some comments that suggest 10.7 may not include Java by default, and there's some kind of first-time-use install process. We probably don't want to get into trying to document that. I think we should consider seriously simplifying this list, since right now it's a sea of versions, and not all of that information is necessary. Flipping the order sounds good. As a straw man, how about we replace everything after the first paragraph with: The most common content types you may need plug-ins for are: - Flash: Abode Flash Player - QuickTime and many other media formats: QuickTime - PDF: PDF Browser Plugin (*Note:* You must install version 2.2 or 2.3, as 2.4 does not support Camino) - Windows Media: Flip4Mac WMV Player - Java: Java Plug-In 2 (10.5+), or Java Embedding Plugin (10.4-10.5) - Shockwave for Director: Abode Shockwave Player - RealMedia: RealPlayer This list is not exhaustive, and other plugins not listed may work in Camino, enabling you to view additional media types. Except where noted, you should install the latest version of the plugin, as older versions of some plug-ins have compatibility issues with Camino. Everything but Java Plug-In 2 would be a link as it currently is. Java Plug-In 2 we'll need to wait for a technote to link to, I think.
Actually, now that I think about it flipping may look cluttered since the links wouldn't all align. We could try keeping the current order and for Java do: - Java Plug-In 2 (10.5+) or Java Embedding Plugin (10.4-10.5), for Java content
Draft on stage http://www-stage.caminobrowser.org/documentation/setup/#find_plugin is certainly cleaner. For now I've left the note about Software Update for QuickTime and Java (because it's currently accurate), but that may need to be changed once 10.7 is out and details of Java installation and updates become clear. I also made Plugin2 10.6+ only, since it's now hidden by default on 10.5 and so forth. I deep-linked to the JEP, since the sf project site UI is so busy and hard to read (and since Steven doesn't have a download link on the website). And I think people are more likely to encounter Real content than Shockwave/Director content these days, so I swapped the order of those (the old list had been in alpha order, but when Adobe rebranded, we never swapped the order). Removing the versions completely breaks Lisa's "are my plug-ins up-to-date" script, but as plug-in version compatibility kept diverging, the current listing was probably not sanely parseable, either.

If Sam and Stuart don't have any major issues with the text as it is on stage (see comment 3), I'll push this and bug 670718 tomorrow. Going to crash right now…

Looks good, except the intro sentence needs to change back or to something else since the order didn't flip. Either something like "The most common plug-ins you may need are:", or the old text, is fine with me. (FWIW, more people complained about the lack of Shockwave support than Real in the early Mac Chrome days. There's at least one lots-of-casual-games site, and some random education site. But I don't think it really matters what exact order we have once we get past the big ones.)

(In reply to comment #1) > Everything but Java Plug-In 2 would be a link as it currently is. Java > Plug-In 2 we'll need to wait for a technote to link to, I think. Still not seeing a TN on Plug-In 2 :( There's http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1421 that lets you download Java on 10.7, but nothing else yet.
