User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; Win64; x64; rv:8.0a1) Gecko/20110710 Firefox/8.0a1 Build ID: 20110710030236 Steps to reproduce: I visit grooveshark.com to listen to music I listen to several songs I look at task manager and the RAM usage is as presented in the screenshot to be greater than 1GB also with 18 more tabs open. I have had GS closed for 1 hour and it's not listed in my "recently closed tabs" menu. Actual results: the RAM usage would normally be around 600-700 some MB for the 18 tabs I currently have open and hold steady, I open grooveshark.com to listen to music and the RAM usage bloats to over 1GB and holds that amount and the RAM is not released. This also happens on any livejournal pages that have a lot of images as well. Some forums trigger this as well. I have had GS closed for 1 hour and the usage is still high. Expected results: I close grooveshark and the RAM usage should be lowered back down after a while and the memory should be released, however the RAM usage is still bloated after closing grooveshark 1 hour ago.

remixedcat: Thanks for the info. A 300--400MB increase for a single site does not necessarily indicate something is wrong. You used the word "bloat" but that might be reasonable for a single site, it depends entirely on what the site is doing, and a music streaming site is likely to be doing a lot. What I am concerned about is the memory usage staying high after you close Grooveshark. If you could do the following it would be very helpful: - Start the browser, open grooveshark and start playing some music. - Open a new tab and type "about:memory" into the address bar, and cut and paste the output somewhere. - Close grooveshark, wait a while, then reload about:memory and cut and paste the output again. You might also like to try hitting the "minimize memory usage" button at the bottom of about:memory to see if that helps. - Put the two about:memory readings into an attachment on this bug report If you are able to do all that it will make it much more likely that any problem can be diagnosed and fixed. Also, do you have any add-ons installed? Finally, you mentioned livejournal pages and forums, I'd like to focus this bug report on grooveshark because that's what you've provided the most specific data for -- bug reports on particular sites are *much* more likely to get attention. If you can narrow down unreasonable memory behaviour to specific livejournal pages or forums, please file new bugs on them! Thanks.

This is after it's been closed for approx 40 minutes... currently not in any "undo closed tab" lists and cache cleared. also after using red. mem. usage buttons. remixedcat: thanks for the data. In comment 9, I assume you still have a bunch of other tabs still open? (Facebook, Yahoo Mail, blogger.com, etc.) I just tried and failed to reproduce. In a recent Linux64 build with a fairly new profile and no add-ons I opened about:memory, then opened GrooveShark in a second tab, played one song, then closed it. The compartment went away immediately after hitting "minimize memory usage". So I wonder if one of the add-ons in comment 5 are causing the problem. remixedcat: if you restart in safe mode (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode) does the problem still occur? If not, that's strong evidence it's one of the add-ons at fault.

Using the a fresh profile on the latest aurora build, I tried it both with and without Adblock Plus (Grooveshark has adds for ABP to block, so it seemed like a likely interaction). Virtual size went from about 200M to about 400M, and only dropped off slightly after closing. It looked to be mostly heap fragmentation and cache, but I've never used about:memory before, so I could be wrong (I saved the about:memory pages and can post if anyone wants). I think it's either patched, or a different add-on causing the issue. The only thing that concerned me was that plugin-container doesn't die when the tab goes away. Is that the expected behavior, or is Firefox keeping something it shouldn't that prevents the plugin from unloading? (And if it's the expected behavior, is there a good reason not to change it? I'd like plugins to close when possible so we can dry out the puddles of leaked memory that some of them produce.)

Firefox 15 was just released, and it fixes most zombie compartments caused by add-ons. remixedcat, are you able to check again and see if this still happens with Firefox 15? Thanks!

I do not have Fx installed on this computer anymore. I had to buy a new HDD and I am using chrome right now, as an addon I need for a job requires chrome. I may get to testing that at a later date or someone else here can test it. I am using a different OS and HDD config as well as different PSU and RAM since then as well. So the situation has changed greatly. Sorry I can't be of assistance at the moment.
Ok... I re-installed firefox... I will get on to testing this....
