User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0
Build ID: 20110615151330
Steps to reproduce:
I clicked on a link "save this page to your bookmarks", I got a dialog to add the URL to my bookmarks, filled out everything and saved the bookmark. If I open the bookmark now, it opens in the sidebar (by default) which is not easy to change (for a luser / BDU)
Actual results:
since ff 5.0 I haven't the opportunity to decide if I want to open a new bookmark in the sidebar or not - the bookmark will always be stored as a "sidebar bookmark"
Expected results:
I must have an option to decide if I want the bookmark opened on my sidebar or not directly when I'm adding it to my browser. it worked already in ff 3.6 but since the last version, the checkbox is not there anymore

"Load this bookmark in the sidebar" is still available when selecting an existing bookmark and selecting Properties, but bug 560305 indicates that it may be removed in the future.

@Thomas,
correct, but not easy to find and to understand. And regarding bug 560305 - as you said: "it may be removed in the future" - in my opinion it MUST be removed asap - at least from a usability perspective ..

this problem is due to the fact webpages are hijacking the webpanel option to allow you to add a bookmark, so they tell you "click here to add a bookmark" when really the action you are doing is "add a web panel".
I agree the right solution is to remove that possibility, bookmarking is something user does interacting with the browser, not with the page.
Depends on: 560305

@Marco Bonardo Can I ask why, I recently discovered this feature for firefox and was over the moon.
I use the sidepanel in Vivaldi and Opera all the time. It is a massive time saver for development to say have access to my trello notes in the sidebar.
I only just started using firefox again after many years, because I had found this ability, now I must go back as it has disapeared.
I couldnt figure it out so have been googling it and found this thread where you say it will be removed, :-( so that must be what happened. this is most depressing,
I signed up for bugzilla to ask this question.
I hope you consider this as by not having this you are falling behind the competition.

We answered multiple times, there are WebExtensions supporting the sidebar: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/search/?q=sidebar and also an experiment https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/side-view/

Another alternative is https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/open-link-in-sidebar. Then right click at your Firefox bookmark > "Open Bookmark in Sidebar."
You need to log in
