As part of our optimization efforts, we also want to update the promotional graphic in the Android Market. The current one doesn't truly convey what Firefox has to offer.
With L10N considerations, let's keep this image-only (but "Firefox" should be fine?)
How about adding small iconic representations of our features/benefits as well as a new screenshot that's swiped to the side to show our tabs?
Can we also make it more Mozilla-y than the current one?
Thanks!
(note: this bug is less priority than the creative for rapid release/aurora updates)

Hey Jaclyn. We have a lot of projects hitting right now, and anything that's not super urgent is getting put on hold. Can we postpone this for a few weeks and come back to it later?
Whenever we do work on this I have a few questions:
- what do you mean by more "Mozilla-y"?
- what features/benefits do you want to show? Are you thinking of something more like what Dolphin has?
- not having text is really going to limit what we can communicate - given our overall priorities around mobile I'd recommend finding the l10n resources to work on this and adding text. It makes it much easier to communicate when you can mix in words with the pictures.
-Mozilla-y as in people can tell it's an official Mozilla Firefox product right when they see the promo graphic (right now it's ambiguous)
-for L10N, we'd have to upload a new graphic for every locale, not sure if Android Market allows us to do so (Irina, do you know?)

Agree with all of Slater's points.
Regarding comment 3:
* I think it's pretty clear that it's an official product given how you've searched for it and all the additional context around it. We can certainly put "Mozilla Firefox" in there, but I don't see how that really makes it any more "official". It looks pretty official to me :)
* L10n: yes, we should be able to add a new image for every locale. But Caitlin made it sound like they didn't want to or didn' thave time, or something like that. I think we should def. explore that, for reasons Slater mentioned above.

Yeah, I guess I still don't understand how to make it more Mozilla-y. It's pretty official feeling to me now.
I do think we could improve on this graphic, but the main way I'd recommend doing that is by putting even a little bit of text in there. Surely if Dolphin can figure it out, we can.
I'm thinking of making it just more consistent with Mozilla branding (elements of mozilla.com maybe?), but also making it more descriptive so that it better demonstrates our features.
We're sticking with no words for now, and won't be localizing it. For example we can show Sync by illustrating data -> phone (but probably shouldn't use Sync logo because people might not know what that is)

I know the paint splashes are relatively new, but we *have* been using those on related promos across the site as well... and I dont' think this is unfamiliar design.... it feels pretty official to me and echoes the moz.com feel.
Also, we should also think about how much information we need to convey in the graphic vs. across the page. I think it's nice having a crisp / clean promo that's compelling but dumping the related product info below it on the site (which is the case now). Otherwise it's going to feel too cluttered.
Also, is there data that suggests this promo isn't working right now?

some feedback and opinion:
I think the idea behind keeping it simple in this version was to not overwhelm with the visual. I fear if we promote specific feature flow in iconic form it could get somewhat busy and confusing. One thing we could do is use some of the feature icons we use on our blue tabs in the feature pages, but simply having them stream out of the screenshot on the phone without any set descriptive narative.
We could also change it to bring it more in-line with mozilla.com with regards to the background/lines, but beyond that I think keeping it clean would be best.
Agreed with keeping it clean.
But right now the current graphic is not compelling enough, and doesn't convey what Firefox can offer to a user who first glances at our Android Market page.
Can we keep it clean but still highlight a couple of Firefox's most important features? For example Opera's graphic shows some of their supported devices and Dolphin uses icons - both still look clean.
I like the idea of having icons stream out of the phone, but the blue tabs are a bit ambiguous. (Rocketship, pencil, fingerprint don't really describe anything)
There's no hard data that the image specifically isn't working, but we're not getting enough downloads and optimizing the Android Market page is going to really help since that's where users go to download

Thanks all. Spoke to Mayumi too.
Lee had done some graphics for mobile recently that showed multiple devices for "sync".. I think we can work with something like that to make the promo more compelling... but keep it visual and not add text. Stay tuned.....

+1 for the solution in comment #10.
My main thing is around timing. We have a lot of "urgent/top priority" requests all hitting at the same time right now. Might need a side convo with Mayumi to figure out the best way to approach them all.
As it currently stands, I'd like to do this but I'd also like to find the appropriate way to slot it in amongst everything else - that probably means not doing this right away (more 'soon' than 'asap').

Yes, this is secondary to the Android Description (already being worked on) and all of the Aurora mobile stuff that Grace is driving. So maybe in 2-3 weeks we reassess, if at all possible, if this could be done in August that would be ideal.

Sounds good, thanks Mayumi. August feels doable.

I have asked Lee to take a look at this, given that it's not a priority but something that he can probably knock out quickly since it will be based on an artwork he recently did for Mobile / Sync promos on mozilla.com.
Just FYI.

I had to re-download Firefox on my Android phone over the weekend, and while I was grabbing it from the Android Market I realized that the display there is very different from the desktop web version. The mobile Android market doesn't display this graphic at all (and the copy is positioned differently too).
Shouldn't we be optimizing for the mobile market? I would think that's a much better place for Android downloads, and it seems like it needs more work.

Hi all,
The Android Market recently included new updates and features that changes the way users discover apps. The graphic is now crucial for an app to be featured, and the Android Market team blogged about helpful tips for the best graphic (http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2011/10/android-market-featured-image.html)
Their tips on what NOT to do:
-use device imagery (which we do)
-use in-app screenshots (which we do)
-use white background (half do)
It would be great if we could spice up our graphic to help boost our chances of being featured, and it's a great way to entice users on the fence about downloading.
Can we try something using a vivid and bold solid background, with the Firefox logo and "Firefox" text? Other creative suggestions greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Good info, thanks. Can you spin up a new bug for the new request? I think that'd be a cleaner way to proceed. We can start fresh that way. (Be sure to include the info from comment #17, though...very useful.)
