In Windows 7 there is an internal util called "Default programs" where you can specify which extensions and protocols should be handled by selected program. If you select Firefox, the list of supported protocols consists of ftp: http: and https: and mailto: is not listed there, but we all know, that Firefox can properly work handle mailto: links using "webmail" (Menu>Tools>Options>Applications>mailto: choose gmail/yahoo/etc.). Regarding this, I think Firefox should tell Windows, that it can also handle mailto: protocol, so it should appear in the list of supported among with ftp: http: and https:
