I also assumed, rather incorrectly it turns out, that the login would attempt the MOCO LDAP.  That would be nice, as well as synchronizing from the phonebook at least as an initial seed

Now that we use Persona to sign into bugzilla.mozilla.org and mozillians.org, it seems like this functionality may no longer be needed.

Are there other use cases for this bug?

Yeah, being able to open mozillians profile of someone from b.m.o would be useful

This is what I came in looking for.  A mozillians.org icon next to commenters' names which takes you to their profile.

Ah, yeah, and the thing that I *really* came in here looking for: variable-length AKA fields on mozillians.org that b.m.o can use to supplement its autocomplete.

Adding an icon next to a users comment would not be trivial as it would need a call out to Mozillians.org to see if the user even has a profile or we would to store a flag in the BMO database that would need to maintained by an API call from the Mozillians phonebook. So I would not see this as something we want to do directly in BMO as it could impact performance. Also we got rid of user icons quite a while back as we are trying to keep the UI as clean as possible. 

One thing of interest that is being worked on currently where this would be a better fit is the user profiles page. We can carry on this discussion there instead.
