IF display:inline-table could work it could be used to emulate the behavior of MS IE to transparent GIF-images. Opera 5.x renders the baground of some link images as red in the test page: http://www.nic.fi/~tapio1/Teaching/ElementitTestB.html (indeed Opera adds few pixels around the images and the red area is larger than the images). I refer problems, which I write here: http://www.nic.fi/~tapio1/Teaching/Ankkurit.html

Could you please provide screenshots of Mozilla behavior and IE behavior for comparison? That would help a lot.

display:inline-table is not implemented in Mozilla yet, and is currently targetted at Future. See bug 18217. Also I'm not sure I understand this bug. We already support transparent gifs. Also I'm not sure what Opera has to do with this.
