I just set up Sync across two machines:
1) Aurora (8) on OS X
2) Nightly (9) on Windows
When I configured Sync on the 2nd device (#2), I received the dreaded status bar with:
Sync encountered an error while connecting: Missing account name
When I restarted Nightly, I now get the "Unknown error" message.

Gah. Just looked at the logs and it is a 503 on a DELETE. Boo server outage. This should be a dupe, right?

Or maybe not. I reproduced this on 9.0a1 (2011-09-22). philikon seemed to think this had been fixed in Nightly. But, my experience disagrees. Still seeing "Unknown error" in this case.

Interesting. We fixed the trivial cases of getting server maintenance errors during the first sync in bug 683396, but due to time constraints (and also smaller bugs + changesets FTW) we left the more finicky bits for later. This work is done in bug 684798 which started out by simply writing tests, but I've since discovered a few places where we don't do the appropriate checks already. So I'll add this case to the tally. Thanks for the report, Greg!

This bug only likely affects Sync 1.1, and it was shut down in the fall of 2015 (https://blog.mozilla.org/services/2015/07/31/shutting-down-the-legacy-sync-service/).
