Steps to reproduce:

I create a component (p) with css:ellipsis as :
text-overflow: ellipsis;
width:50px;
padding-left:2px;
overflow: hidden;
white-space: nowrap;

I put inside this 'p' an image positionned in relative with left property filled as :
left:	-2px;
right:	2px;
position:	relative;

and a text

see attached file for a simple html example



Actual results:

The image was replacing by '...', result is like :

... some tex...



Expected results:

The image will not be replacing because there is enought place in the parent.
I don't know how the spec are but i think (sorry if i'm wrong) there is a bug on this case

This looks like a duplicate of bug 684266.

maybe it's duplicate, note if you remove the style properties :
left:	-2px;
right:	2px;
on the image everything is ok.

Another information can be the result of the test case (test.html) in chrome is differnent than what FF do.

i see lot of discussion on #684266 and let you see first this one

IMHO, i don't understand why without the ellipsis rules the image is seen, and when ellipsing is on, it's not possible for a child to enter in the padding area of the parent. the overflow:hidden do not hide this case, why the ellipsis property should do that
