User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 Build ID: 20110930135208 Steps to reproduce: Firefox omits the "http://" in the navigation bar, but If I paste a similar string "www.mozilla.org" into firefox to open this web page, then firefox just ignores it. I have to paste "http://www.mozilla.org". This is inconsistent and confusing.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 works for me
> If I paste a similar string "www.mozilla.org" into firefox Paste where exactly? Can you reproduce the problem in Firefox Safe Mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode If I paste www.mozilla.org into an empty location bar and type ENTER (or click the arrow button at the right side of the location bar) it loads www.mozilla.org using Firefox 7 on Linux x86_64
I paste it into the browser window, not into the navigation bar. Using safe mode I get the same result. To reproduce: Run echo www.mozilla.org | xclip or select the text with the left mouse button. Next click the middle mouse button in the browser window. Try the same using "http://www.mozilla.org".
Nothing happens when I paste http://www.mozilla.org/ into the content window either. Is that feature provided by an add-on?
Using -safe-mode the extensions were off, so it cannot be an add-on.
PS: in about:config you might want to check middlemouse.paste .
Sorry, I missed that you said middle-click paste and thought you meant keyboard paste. Yes, I can reproduce the problem as you described it. I'm not sure it's a bug though, it might be intentional to avoid accidental loads.
Severity: normal → enhancement
Summary: accept "www.mozilla.org" via clipboard → Middle-click paste should load "www.mozilla.org" (that is, even without the "http://")
It might be safe to load the same patterns we recognize for the context menu item "open link in new tab" though, which recognizes www.mozilla.org but not a single word for example.
This is still a problem with FF 9.0.1 (Fedora 16/x86_64, FWIW). Both the URL bar and Vimperator's "o", "t", and "w" command accepts locations without the scheme (and they use http:// as a default), but middlemouse.paste doesn't. It is quite annoying.
Still broken in Firefox 10.0.3. Annooooooying!
