Right now, users have to be vouched to look at other profile information. This isn't helpful except to a very limited group. We should make it possible for contributors who want to show more information publicly to non-vouched users and/or to the world. Needs a set of requirements though.
Privacy must work both ways: allow more exposure for those who want it, and provide reliable and understandable control for those who want that. At present we have just three categories of people: Anon: cannot see *any* personal identifiable data. Applicant: can see and edit their own data, plus enough system stuff to fill in the application form. Mozillian: can see everything. This is a very simple community model - you are 'in' or you are 'out', and anyone who is 'in' can bring anyone else in with them. However much we might like to think that all Mozillians are trustworthy, in practice that is not realistic. Even if Mozilla-the-project trusts everyone, Mozillians are not going to trust all other Mozillians as the community is far too big for that. Gerv's original proposal was to 'do privacy right': https://wiki.mozilla.org/Domesday He even provided a mockup of how the UI might work: http://www.gerv.net/usability/domesday/ Under this proposal, every attribute in a user's entry is controllable such that the user can say exactly who gets to see it. [OK, 'exactly who' *could* be done but might be overkill - in Gerv's version there are broad groups that can be granted access] Bug 690536 shows that the privacy stuff is already being asked for. The original poster asked to expose some personal information in URLs, and a later commenter complained that their e-mail address was being forcibly exposed against their wishes. Privacy is a priority-1 item for this phase of development: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mozillians/Milestones/Phase2 so we need some requirements ASAP... Suggestions please!
