To have an option to set Mozilla mail or news as a default for mail / news handling (Configuration Panel, Internet Options, tab 'Programs') Mozilla needs to populate a few registry settings. Note that these settings do *not* change any user settings, or defaults. The user still has to choose Mozilla as the mail/news handler. Because it doesn't change any user settings and only registers Mozilla as a mail / news client, I think this belongs to the installer. I guess this can be added to mail.jst, I could create a patch using the App Paths registration in Browser.jst as a sample. Netscape 4.7 also registers itself this way, as a subkey of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\. It is also possible to register the HTML editor, but I'll have to figure out the correct keys for that. If there is agreement on the location for this registration / no objection for registing I'll like to try to create a patch.
The URL with information about the registry keys is http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/browser/configuration/ClientReg/ClientRegistr yLayout.asp In Microsoft style not al information is correct, and the settings are not only used by IE, but it gives the general idea
Marking NEW.

Summary: Better mail/news Windows integration / registration → [RFE] Better mail/news Windows integration / registration
Perhaps this might be better done along with the windows file associations dialog at the startup of the browser?
nom nsbeta1, we should try to do this if we can.

Kevin, I think this feature needs more definition, and may have some impact on mail news. So, reassigning to you for consideration.

Missed 0.9.3.
Target Milestone: mozilla0.9.3 → mozilla0.9.4
Mozilla mail cannot be a default mail handeler because it does not support MAPI. Until we have this support, this bug won't get fixed. Punting this to 0.9.5.
Target Milestone: mozilla0.9.4 → mozilla0.9.5
Depends on: 91702
That would be 91702.
moving to 0.9.6
Target Milestone: mozilla0.9.5 → mozilla0.9.6

So it looks like we have simple mapi (or hopefully will soon on the trunk). I think all that's left is to handle mailto: which looks to be covered in 96717 which perhaps we should take back from law. Is there anything else left in this bug?
moving to 0.9.8
