On Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Steve Jobs mourning background gradient shows ugly banding in Firefox Nightly. In the stock browser and in Opera Mobile, the gradient looks ok.
We need dithering to make gradients look good in 16 bit color (bug 683243), or we need to switch to 24- or 32-bit color.

This page doesn't use a gradient anymore.

Gradients still show ugly banding on other sites, e.g. http://hsivonen.iki.fi/frontend-finland/slides.html#1

Why haven't we switched to 24-bit or 32-bit color already? Wasn't 16-bit a Nokia N8x0-motivated thing?

I believe it affects memory usage, and if I understand correctly, earlier versions of Android also used 16-bit drawing by default, and some Android devices have 16-bit display hardware. But see further discussion in bug 688812 and bug 683243.

This is still an issue on a Samsung Galaxy S (i9000).
Works fine on stock.
Hi,

any update on this?

Thanks
So bug 683243 has been fixed. Is this still a problem?
Banding is still visible on any gradient image vs. stock.

Hi,

is there an update to this?

Thanks
This issue is reported last year and still not solved obviously. I just got Galaxy S4, downloaded Firefox and I'm getting terrible images as reported initially (gradient backgrounds distortion). Viewing the same images on other browsers is excellent however.
This will be fixed by bug 803299
