The dark veil can be a problem while working on the design of a node (colors being altered, contrast is different). A button in the infobar is an option. Or maybe in the Style Inspector. Also, should we hide the dashed-box as well?
It seems to me that something in the infobar or maybe the toolbar would work well. Since this is about how the highlighted element is presented, it seems like the Style Inspector would feel like a strange place for this control. When you say, "should we hide the dashed-box as well", that would just leave the infobar, right? That seems like a good idea to me. I'll be interested in shorlander's opinion on this as well
