One of our Q4 goals for devengage is to grow the number of "active" profiles on MDN. We will likely encourage anyone working on Apps, documentation, etc. to update their MDN profiles... but it will be great to find touch points for promoting this as well. One obvious place is during the demo submission process for Demo Studio and Dev Derby. I would like to add a promo in the sidebar encouraging people to go visit their user profile and add information there to help grow our community.

Who needs to get this bug for next steps? Looks like it needs copy, design, etc before one of us webdevs can implement.
Ill take it and provide copy and ideas. Hopefully Craig can then whip something up. It will probably look similar to the webdev promos we just added.

Will we have copy & template in time for code-freeze tomorrow? If not, please bump to 1.7.
Bumping to 1.7 until Jay gets back.
Target Milestone: 1.6 → 1.7
(In reply to Craig Cook from comment #4) > Bumping to 1.7 until Jay gets back. Thanks Craig. We'll get this in next time. I'll try to whip something up for you to work with by end of this week before taking off on PTO next week.
Craig: Let's create a promo block with the following: 1. Title/CTA: Update your MDN profile. 2. Short description: Share your developer interests and areas of expertise with the MDN community. We'll be able to bring you a better, more customized experience and you will have a place to show off the amazing work you do. ------------ That needs work, but see if you can create something nice to bring attention to it for people submitting demos. And we can try new iterations for other places on MDN. Thanks!

Preview at http://mozilla.focalcurve.com/mdn/demo-submit.php Should we include a link to their profile? I'm not sure, since it would lead them away from the form... but then again, maybe we want them to update their profile *before* they submit a demo? Or, since it's kind of a logical follow-up action (submit demo, then update your profile) maybe we should put a prompt on the page after a successful submit. What page do they go to? The demo detail page, presumably? I'm not sure where we could squeeze it in there. Maybe some kind of status bar at the top of the page. We could also wrap this in some logic to only show it to people who have just signed up, or who have mostly-empty profiles (no tags, no bio, no location, etc) and hide it from others. It might be pointless to have this prompt if you already have a full profile, or if you just updated it a few minutes ago.
"since it's kind of a logical follow-up action (submit demo, then update your profile) maybe we should put a prompt on the page after a successful submit." +1 How about we put it big on the top of the demo detail page when a demo creator is looking at their own demo? A prompt-type promo like "Hey! Have you updated your developer profile so everyone who looks at your demo can find out more about you?" Benefits: * It's a logical follow-up action after submitting a demo. * Demo creators see the prompt every time they look at their demos - not just when they submit it. Then maybe a follow-up enhancement is to only show it to creators with mostly-empty profiles.
I like Luke's idea if we can make it happen. But for the promo we have now, I was just hoping to have it link to the user's profile page and let them figure out how to get back to the submission form. I believe we have a "Submit a demo" button on the user profile page, so hopefully that helps them loop back. I agree we can do some smart detection of users in need of profile updates and then add the flow either before or after demo submissions in the future. Craig: Can you try to adjust the text to include a CTA button that takes the user to the profile? Maybe something like "Go to my profile" button? And then find a good way to put up a reminder to update profiles in the spots Luke mentioned? Another crazy idea I had was to create an MDN ID badge for all users and use that badge in place of the username links we have now. That way there is a more visual representation of members and people will click on it more (and hopefully realize there are full profiles for everyone).
"MDN ID badge" should really just be a small gravatar icon next to the username, IMO. (For examples, see github, stack overflow, bitbucket, sourceforge.net ... the whole internet?) That's a pretty simple change and we can de-couple it from this. I'll file a new 1.8 bug for it.
