The old docs site, now on https://www-archive.mozilla.org/docs/end-user/, had a useful subset of this information, but the two pages it linked to that had the config variable names were on Geocities and both have disappeared.

The warning at the top says, "Most of this content is highly out of date (some pages haven't been updated since the project began in 1998) and exists for historical purposes only." So you're not going to find anything useful there, and that's not something that will be fixed. The page to watch is the one I put in the URL field:
https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Mozilla/Preferences/Preference_reference

It's rather barren at the moment. There's the more complete knowledge base article on MozillaZine.

And if you're unclear on what a preference does, you can check if there's a comment in the Hg log that explains it. Example:
