To reproduce, I have only to create a new profile, open the page in a medium size window (1066x915) then resize the browser window.

It happened consistently when compiz was enabled. When I switched to metacity, I had to repeat it rapidly four or five times before it crashed.

WebGL normally works fairly well on this computer. fglrx has never been any great prize, and has always done poorly at xrender, but this is kind of new. Have not had any other crashes on the many many webgl demos I've tried, nor on the test suite.

Too large a texture?
Hm. Now it is crashing on:

As well...

Aaaand, when I retested ro.me, while it seemed fine, after minimising/unminimising a few times, entire X session froze up until I killed firefox.

Sooo, perhaps card/driver isn't quite as reliable as I thought.

Oh. Also, system info:
Ubuntu 11.04, 2.6.38-11-generic x86_64

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV730XT [Radeon HD 4670]

[ 23.693] (II) Module fglrx: vendor="FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc."
[ 23.700] compiled for 1.4.99.906, module version = 8.84.60
OS: Other → Linux
Hardware: Other → x86_64
Addendum. After rebooting, the problem was no longer reproducible, even after 20 or 30 attempts.

I'll try again after the desktop has been running for a few weeks. Could just be some long-term instability.
Thanks for the report; if this is reproducible, it will add to the case for blacklisting FGLRX altogether.

Problem definitely is reproducible on many webgl demos with large textures.
It doesn't take that long for it to start happening either. Can happen in just a few hours of desktop use.
Logging out, then logging back in to my account was sufficient to fix. Switching from Compiz to Metacity helped, but only seemed to delay.
Suggests a leak perhaps...

However, my 8.84.60 is definitely well behind the upstream of 8.88.1 (Catalyst 11.4 vs 11.9)
Sooo, I suppose all I can say is the version of fglrx released standard w/ Ubuntu 11.04 is definitely crashy.

I'll try latest driver soon. Might just update to Ubuntu 11.10, as much as Unity and Gnome Shell annoy me (there's always XFCE4.8).

If you've just blacklisted all fglrx by then, I can always just comment on the closed bug, or just file a new one requesting whitelisting newer versions :)

Do you try latest driver?
Whiteboard: webgl-driver
I did, with same behaviour, but, I'm now on the FOSS radeon driver which is much better behaved.
Maybe not as good performance, but I'll take not-crashing over performance any day.
Mass resolving WFM: signature(s) hasn't(/haven't) reported in past 28 days.
