Here is an improvement request for Firefox 6.0 on Mac OS X. In Firefox, I have the dialog asking me to update it to version 7.0.1. I want to update, so I click “Update Firefox”. Firefox tells me that updating has failed because connecting failed, and that I can download the new Firefox manually from the Web site. AirPort was turned off, so I had no Internet connection. Expected next events : I want to update Firefox to version 7.0.1 now. There is a “Retry” choice. I turn AirPort on. I click “Retry”. Firefox updates itself. Actual next events : I want to update Firefox to version 7.0.1 now. But there is no “Retry” choice. So I close the update dialog. I turn AirPort on. And I wait for the update dialog to come again. In 2 days maybe ?
I don;t have a Mac, but I would assume it is like other platforms. On the Help -> "About Firefox" page, there should be a "Check for Updates" button.
There might be. But I wouldn't dare click it. Once bitten, twice shy. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=682635
Component: General → Application Update
Product: Firefox → Toolkit

The current fallback of notifying again after 12 hours or opening the About Dialog or Preferences is adequate for the vast majority of clients so I'm going with wontfix
